When teachers return this session they will find a new homicide benefit waiting in their NEW insurance packet. $150,000 will be paid to the family members of any NEA member who is killed through an act of violence while on the job. There is no additional charge for this coverage. The intense media coverage of recent tragedies such as the murder of Dave Sanders at Columbine and Barry Grunow in Florida have alerted us to these issues and highlighted the need for such benefits to be added to existing policies. While this is a very scary scenario for most of us, we must realize that school murders are relatively rare. According to "The American Teacher", 1993, we teachers are more apt to be assaulted at our jobs than murdered. Teachers who are strict in academic and behavioral demands are thought to be the most at-risk. While teaching is certainly not considered to be one of the most dangerous professions, this is little comfort for the families of the 29 school employees violently killed at work during the last decade. |
